Exams.. of all kinds

I just don't know how to begin, so much has happened these two weeks. I had exams as I told you earlier but half the way through the exams and after dad had a colonoscopical examination it turned out he needs an operation and needed to have it as soon as possible. Colonoscopy revealed ulcer and multiple small fungating tumors that caused partial obstruction of the intestine (this line was written with the help of my sister, of course). I overheard this accidentally since mom and dad had decided to hide this as long as possible so we could study!

The surgery was scheduled on Sunday, I had an Electromagnetics exam at the same time of the operation. Both the exam and the operation were delayed since the roads were blocked; many students couldn't reach the university on time. The surgeon's neighborhood was surrounded, the ambulance couldn't get to him, they had to call the police so they can escort him to the ambulance and they arrived at the hospital two hours after the scheduled time. There were about 12 doctors (friends and relatives) at the OR and if it wasn't for all the calls they've made the operation would have probably been delayed for a later date.

The surgery went well but there was more at stake for dad than expected.. They had to remove the sigmoid and do a temporary colostomy which he is going to have to remove in another operation in three weeks.

I couldn't go to the hospital and see him. I had to wait in college for two hours and a half after the exam every day because I had to go back with my cousins.. I was supposed to go see him yesterday but the taxi took so long and by the time he came to take us to the hospital I was struggling to stay conscious and had an Electronics exam to study for so I let HNK and my sister go without me. Today and finally I finished my exams and was dreaming of going to the hospital and seeing dad but he came home before I got back from college. The road was very crowded and it took them a long time to get to the house and he's still feeling dizzy because of it.
Now dad has been lying in bed ever since I came back from college, looking as if he's lost 10+ kilos since he's been feeding on drinks only for over a week, and was allowed a max. of half a cup of water each hour for the last two days. He has a fever occasionally but he doesn't complain at all.

My sister is sleeping at our house today because she knows when and how to give him his medicine. A consequence of this is that Aya, Ayman and Anas are all sleeping here and so we're all on the verge of going crazy right now. People started visiting to check on dad days before the surgery but now the number of people is increasing.

Oh, I did okay in the exams. I couldn't concentrate much in this week's exams but the exam questions on Sunday were exceptionally easy and so I did well on that. The rest weren't very bad either so with everything else I've decided not to complain. I was able to ignore and even deny the surroundings and still am.. HNK still has one exam and she doesn't seem to be able to concentrate at all and I don't blame her.

We're waiting for still more test results after dad's operation.. and I just pray all ends well and we can go on "normally" with our lives. The results of my exams will follow.

The weather is going insanely hot though it was relatively better today.. Sleeping without electricity with all the exam nightmares has become such a pain.. I am in charge of Ayman this night and though we're both supposed to sleep in the living-room today I am hoping at least one of us would be able to.

Oh and I almost forgot about my birthday.. Of course there was no cake, and it was only my cousin's friend (also my friend) who sang happy birthday to me as soon as he left the exam hall, that was such a pleasant surprise but it got few of my classmates confused :) I had a programming exam that day and I did okay so that was enough, and the family didn't forget my presents.

What's happening?

Friday, April 11, 2008

The days have passed quite fast these two weeks. In college we were occupied with the graduation party of the fourth stage. My cousin's party was supposed to be in the college garden and they had many activities in mind. The plans I made him confess to made me very excited to attend the ceremony.

Years ago, graduation parties used to be made in the big university stadium.. All colleges used to celebrate the event together. After the war, and because of fear of being targeted at such big numbers, each college started to celebrate alone. Now, and because of the threats the university's been receiving, most colleges don't have formal celebrations, as the case with my cousin's party. It was cancelled, and they were frustrated. They ended up making it outside the campus, and my cousin described it as a complete disaster..

The second term written exams start on the 20th this month, and I have two non-written exams on Sunday (Electronics and Communications lab) and Wednesday (Visual Basic lab) this week.

I had a bit of a fight with one of the engineers in the lab yesterday: PERFECT timing. The experiment discussion questions always have mistakes, and I have been getting low marks and wasn't convinced with the corrections and reasons of the low mark for the last 3 reports. I decided I am not going to hold it in this time and so I objected. We argued and argued and I ended up borrowing an Electronics book and bringing it to convince him.. and finally went to the Electronic professor who promised to talk to him himself. I must have been very angry because the prof. kept calming me down. I feel bad now and I'm afraid my relationship with this engineer might not be as "calm" as it used to be and I really used to admire him eversince he managed to give us a quiz, help us all do the experiments and rate the quiz questions all by himself while his colleagues decided to make a strike.

Other students who have written the same answer -with the only difference of bad grammar- have had 2/2 while I had 0/2, just because different people rated the reports.

My uncle was in England last week, he goes there occasionally to meet his PhD supervisor. He met four lecturers from my college who have gone to New Castle to study. I didn't even know they had left. They haven't given me any lectures before but they recognized my uncle immediately because they said he looked exactly like my cousin. Some of them said my mom has taught them engineering drawing when she was teaching that in the College of Electrical Engineering many years ago.. This world keeps proving it's so small!

Okay, I think that's it for now.. the usual routine is for me to ask you to wish me luck and pray for me.. I guess I have to stop asking you because you've gotten used to it by now :)
And that photo has nothing to do with the post.. it's the latest photo of baby Anas :)
